What "evolution" is

“Evolution” is simply change over time. Occasionally, but not always, that change involves intelligent designers.

The automobile has “evolved”. A modern automobile looks very little like a Model T. Surely that’s due to human designs but it is appropriate to call it evolution nonetheless.

Geological features such as mountains evolve (change over time). It does so through natural processes. Plate tectonics push (some of) the mountains up while erosion wears them down. The bottom line is that they look different over geological time. They have, therefore, evolved.

So “evolution” is not the scary thing that some think it to be.

Of course when we discuss “evolution” in book like this one, we are really discussing “biological evolution”.
