Something Really Stupid in the Bible

The discussion over human sacrifice in the Bible gave me the opportunity to read Judges 11. I found these verses passage especially interesting:

[30] And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD : "If you give the Ammonites into my hands, [31] whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the LORD's, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering."

Let's think about this for a second. Jephthah was going to offer as a BURNT SACRIFICE the very living thing that came out of the door of his house to meet him.

Note it is not necessarily the first thing to come out of the door. It was the first thing out of the door to meet him.

We also need to emphasize, yet again, that we are talking about a BURNT SACRIFICE of whatever came out.

As it happens, the first thing out of the door, rather tragically, was his daughter. But really, what did he expect it to be? It's the FRONT DOOR OF HIS F**ING HOUSE! How could it POSSIBLY be a shock that it was his daughter?

Who could possibly make a VOW to God based on those circumstances?

Moreover, why would God accept it?

Yet again, we need to emphasize that we're CLEARLY talking about a BURNT OFFERING!

How completely stupid do you have to be to make a VOW like that?

Fortunately, we can simply reject such passages as myths since they come from a book filled with other myths. But those who insist that this is an actual account clearly have little regard for God.

  1. May I ask, are you saying that foolish people don't exist at all on earth or never had, such as to be able to make such a foolish vow?

Do you have any evidence that God "accepted" this vow?

Until then, I remain sceptical about your scepticism.
